Media Communications Department Equipment Store Guidelines
The Media Communications Department Equipment Store provides access to a variety of audio and visual equipment for the academic use of staff and students within the department. The primary purpose of the Equipment Store is to support academic delivery, and this function will always take precedence. While the department strives to accommodate equipment needs as a courtesy, availability is not guaranteed.
Students must present a valid MTU ID card to borrow equipment.
The Equipment Store will be closed on public holidays and during university closure periods.
Please note that while the online booking system will remain active, bookings cannot be processed during these times as the store will be closed. This automated function cannot currently be disabled.
1. Conditions of Use
Equipment is strictly for academic projects, not personal or commercial use.
Access is limited to department staff and students. Others require written approval from the Head of Department.
Borrowers are limited to one item per equipment type. Additional items for projects require lecturer approval, with requests sent to technical staff by email. Approval depends on availability.
2. Lending Periods
- Opening hours and loan periods are emailed each semester further emails on borrowing times may be sent if there is a need to alter these during the academic semester.
- Late returns or misuse of equipment will incur penalty points.
- Repeated borrowing offenses will lead to suspensions or permanent suspension.
For extended loans, lecturers must email Crawford.MediaSupport@mtu.ie for approval.
3. Liability
Borrowers are fully responsible for equipment’s safe return, including accessories.
Liability remains with the original borrower even if equipment is transferred to another student.
- Loss/Damage: Report immediately to Crawford.MediaSupport@mtu.ie.
- Following internal investigation and/or external diagnostics review, students may be liable for replacing or repairing any equipment that is lost, stolen, or damaged while on loan.
4. Booking and Collection
All bookings must be made via the department’s booking website, not in-person.
Borrowers must confirm equipment functionality at collection. Issues must be reported before leaving the store.
Equipment loaned to others remains the responsibility of the original borrower until returned.
5. Return of Equipment
Equipment must be returned by the due date, clean, functional, and with all accessories.
Faulty or damaged items must be reported upon return.
6. Penalty Points System
Late Returns: 1 point per working day.
Damage/Incomplete Return: Immediate suspension during investigation; possible permanent suspension.
Loss/Theft: Immediate suspension pending investigation.
Suspensions:
3 points: 3 academic weeks suspension.
1 additional point: An additional 3 academic weeks suspension.
Further Accumulation of points: Longer or indefinite suspension.
Points are cumulative across the academic year.
- Penalty points may be removed if you are late due to Extenuating Circumstances. You should email Media Support at crawford.mediasupport@mtu.ie in the first Instance to let them know and forward any supporting documentation to the Department Administrator at crawford.mediacomms@mtu.ie.
- If you have classes scheduled for the day of return, your Year Coordinator must liaise with Media Support to confirm that you have classes scheduled at that time.
7. Prohibited Uses
Equipment is for academic purposes related to Media Communications Department projects only. Use for private or commercial activities is strictly prohibited and will result in indefinite suspension from the service.
